THE GREAT DANE CLUB

Members’ Limited Show

Saturday 25th March 2017

Judge:  Gary Withers

I would like to start by thanking the many exhibitors who entered their Danes under me and took my decisions in such a sporting manner.  Also thank you to the committee of this very well run show for their wonderful welcome and hospitality and a big thank you to my steward Janet Brooker who had the unenviable task of keeping track of all the Danes and handlers who were running between both shows.

I found excellent bone and substance in nearly all exhibits although a few were lacking the required elegance that gives our breed such uniqueness and defines them as Great Danes.  My biggest concern was with soft toplines although in some cases this could have been helped with better handling.

Minor Puppy Dog (6/2)

1. Thuriby’s Jujtinian Lord Bradley.  Fawn boy so well put together for a 6 month old who behaved impeccably for his first show.  Loved his head for its correct planes with the required amount of stop.  Excellent eye shape and colour with typical expression. Good reach of neck and firm topline.  Would prefer to see more layback of shoulder which would give him a better flow from neck to topline.  A very promising puppy who I am sure will go far.

2. Simpson’s Renescent Super Sic. A well balanced 7 month old harli with good flat bone.  Correct  topline and croup with enough angulation front and rear.  Excellent feet.  Didn’t have the typical head of my winner but has plenty of time on his side.

3. Kelleway’s Damarkann Marquisite.

Puppy Dog (3/-)

1. Bishton’s Jaydania Bjorn Borg.  This outstanding 9 month old fawn took my eye as soon as he entered the ring. Outstanding for his overall type and quality, excellent headpiece with good length and width of foreface.  Correct ear set and a lovely eye shape and colour that gave him his typical expression.  Good shoulder assembly and just enough rear angulation to keep his movement balanced and correct.  When he matures and settles into his body he will no doubt be one to watch.  I predict a very bright future for this youngster.  My Best Dog, Res Best In Show and Best Puppy.

2. Price and Southgate’s Bombadier Boy Via Leamap.  A well grown blue with a decent head and correct expression.  He has enough neck and a pleasing topline.  Good angulation front and rear.  Has plenty of time to tighten up and mature into a fine adult.

3. MacKenzie’s Carsan Arianell.

Junior Dog (3/-)

1.Walton’s Ravendane Rock Or Bust. A nicely balanced 12 month old blue and another who has plenty of time to develop. Well placed shoulders and nicely turned stifles with correct croup so I have no doubt this boy will finish up a very good mover but currently very loose coming and going but showing great reach and excellent drive.

2. Dyson’s Samdice My Hero.  Very little separated my first and second.  Another very smart 12 month old who has a better head than my winner with good planes and width of muzzle. Plenty to like about him but at this stage not so well balanced and not the correct croup that I found in my winner.

3. Bollons Bandwar For Aces High.

Novice Dog (7/3)

1. Bishton’s Jaydania Bjorn Borg.

2. Wallis and Simmond’s Adoreadane Just That Jazz For Danojan.  An attractive 12 month old Mantle. Head on he presents a gun barrel front but unfortunately his straight upper arm restricts his reach which combined with his very good rear angulation unbalances his movement.  Nice flow from neck to topline and again another with plenty of time on his side.

3. Wood’s Castledayz Jagermeister.

Graduate Dog (5/1)

1. Pepper’s Danemoor Black Watch For Sarawen. A well boned boy presenting a good solid black colour.  Very nice shoulder assembly and enough angulation both front and rear that gives him his well balanced movement.  A solid topline that he held on the move.  Excellent tight feet.

2. MacKenzie’s Carsan Arianell.  Only 11 months and in his previous class was reluctant to let me handle him but now he had settled down. A decent dog with good head planes and correct lip.  Enough neck to give an overall balanced appearance.  A sound honest dog.

3. Bollon’s Daysue Born Ready.

Post Graduate Dog (1/-)

1. Pepper’s Sarawen Arch Deacon.  A decent head with nice eye and expression.  Gun barrel front with correct layback of shoulder.  Another with excellent feet but a slightly untidy topline detracted from an otherwise smart dog.

Limit Dog (2/1)

1. Collett’s Foaldown Secret Mission.  Handsome fawn boy that took my eye as soon as he entered the ring.  He presents a very balanced picture with a quality head of the required length, parallel planes and enough stop.  A darker eye would soften his expression. Good length of neck that sits very nicely into his well laid shoulders.  A text book rear end that no doubt gives him his outstanding movement.  A soft topline while stacked would improve if he stood up on his front although he held a strong topline on the move.  My Reserve Dog.

Open Dog (2/-)

1. Chappell and Dyson’s Selmalda Journey To The Line.  Masculine fawn dog with a very nice headpiece dark eye and kind expression.  Excellent front with tight, well laid shoulders and well angulated rear.  More reach of neck would present a more balanced picture.

2. Flanagan’s Dainmajik The Enchanter For Soupwry. A big brindle boy with a very attractive head possessing correct planes and finish of muzzle.  His well turned stifles and strong second thigh unfortunately isn’t matched at his front end which shows a straight upper arm and upright shoulders resulting in unbalanced movement. Very short coupled.

Sp Harlequin Open Dog (2/1)

1. Pocock’s Tamzdane Oh My Apple Pie JW.  Without doubt this owner/breeder was by far the best handler of the day making the absolute best of her charges.  I see from this boy’s JW he has been held in high regard by many judges but for me he doesn’t possess a typical Dane head being too short in length both back skull and muzzle and far too deep in lip.  Nevertheless he has much to like about the rest of him including an excellent flow from neck to topline, strong hindquarters with well turned stifles although I would prefer a shorter loin. Moved with good reach and drive.

Sp Blue Open Dog (3/-)

1. Pepper’s Sarawen Arch Deacon.

2. Walton’s Ravendane Rock Or Bust.

3. Price and Southgate’s Bombadier Boy Via Leamap.

Sp Black Open Dog (2/1)

1. Pepper’s Danemoor Black Watch For Sarawen.

Sp Brindle Open Dog (2/1)

1. Flanagan’s Dainmajik The Enchanter For Soupwry.

Sp Fawn Open Dog (3/1)

1. Collett’s Foaldown Secret Mission.

2. Ingram’s Dainmajik The Wizard AI.  Upstanding dog with good head planes, correct stop and good ear set. Standing slightly over his pasterns and would prefer better layback of shoulders.  Pleasing, strong topline and correctly angled hindquarters. Moved out well.

Sp Mantle Open Dog (2/1)

1. Wallis and Simmond’s Adoreadane Just That Jazz For Danojan.

Sp Veteran Dog (1/-)

1. Black’s Bandwar Happy As Larry JW SH CM.  This 7 year old Harlequin had so much to like about him and considering his age was one of the best movers on the day with good reach and drive and his short strong hocks that look straight at you when viewed from behind really helped propel him around the ring. His head lacks the required length but he has excellent flow from neck into his shoulders and a smooth transition onto his topline.

Minor Puppy Bitch (4/1)

1. Thurlby’s Jujtinian Lady Beatrice. Litter sister to my Minor Puppy Dog winner and very similar with many of the same qualities. Her breeder/owner should feel very proud to present two excellent puppies.  This pretty girl is outstanding for her beautiful eye and expression and superb hindquarters who moved so well for one so young.  Once again as with her brother I would prefer more layback of shoulder which would correct the flow from neck to topline but with maturity and muscle this will improve.

2. Middleton’s Damarkann Illicit Love.  6 month harli being well balanced for her age although a typically untidy puppy.  Nice flat bone and tight feet.  Her topline will settle with maturity and she will no doubt develop into a very nice adult.

3. Day’s Vanmore Sparkling Eyes For Janriche.

Puppy Bitch (3/-)

1. Daydania Steffi Graff.  Litter sister to my best dog and once again she shares many of her brothers qualities.  Excellent dark eye of correct shape with typical expression.  Head has correct planes although I hope her back skull doesn’t strengthen any more as she matures. Nicely placed ears which she will grow into.  I wasn’t keen on her prominent prosternum.  My congratulations to her breeder/owner for presenting two quality youngsters.

2. Bourton’s Zefather Crazy Diamond For Verano. Loved this girl’s head with her dark eye and beautiful expression.  Excellent front and was outstanding from behind.  Unfortunately at this age showing a soft topline but this can improve with maturity.

3. Shadbolt’s Jaydania Monica Seles.

Junior Bitch (3/-)

1. Tempest’s Adoreadane Just The Ticket. A well grown 12 month Harli with a nice head of the correct length.  Would prefer more layback of shoulder but has a good topline and well turned hindquarters which she used to her advantage on the move. Excellent feet which many today lacked.  She has a look at me attitude which was very apparent in the challenge.  Her lack of nose pigmentation didn’t deter me from awarding her reserve bitch.

2. Walton’s Tamzdane Bohemian Rasberry At Ravendane. Very well handled 17 month old mantle.  Untypical head being too short and too deep in muzzle but a sound bitch who moved out well.

3. Dyson’s Samdice Best Of You AI.

Novice Bitch (4/2)

1.Croft’s Wanderhund Strip Tease At Doubtwell. A pretty 20 month old Harli with good lay of shoulder and correct turn of stifle with nice strong hocks which she used when moving.  Would prefer a firmer topline.

2. Black’s Bandwar Taylor Made.  This 10 month old black girl has a nice dark eye which I believe is so essential in a black Dane.  Although straight in upper arm has good layback of scapula which gave a smooth flow from neck to body.  Down on her pasterns.

Graduate Bitch (2/1)

1.  Donelly’s Primus Timeless Style. Very nice fawn girl who excelled in movement both fore and aft. A reasonable shoulder assembly with a good hind quarter with correct angulation and width of second thigh. Another that stood with a soft topline but was a real contender for the reserve bitch award.

Post Graduate Bitch (3/-)

1. Shadbolt’s Akura Inside In A Dream.  I loved her from the moment she entered the ring.  She is outstanding for her feminine but strong and typey head piece set on a beautiful swanlike neck that flows smoothly into well angulated shoulders.  She presents standing with a soft topline but this hardens on the move so I strongly suggest her handler does everything possible to get this beautiful bitch to stand up on her front.  Even though I believe she is over angulated in the rear her hocks are incredibly strong and when viewed from behind they look straight back at you.  She moves as a Dane should with reach and drive.  I had no hesitation in awarding her best bitch and ultimately Best In Show.

2. Bourton’s Tenaya Cherokee Sun Dance For Verano. A quality bitch who is very sound both standing and moving. Good front with neat shoulders and an excellent rear end.  Slightly untidy topline and was unlucky to meet the winner today.

3. Squires and Stevens Garsak Season Of The Witch At Tabordane.

Limit Bitch (4/2)

1. Collett’s Foaldown Secret Whisper. Quality 2 year old fawn with a gun barrel front.  Correct head set on a good length of neck and a very nice hind quarters. Another with a soft topline and was moving close behind.

2. Everett’s Dainmajik Witch’s Brew AI. A tall 2 year old fawn with a pretty head that had parallel planes and correct drop of lip. A decent length of neck that flowed smoothly into her shoulders.  She was turning out in the front and was weak in the hock which was apparent when moving.

Open Bitch (2/-)

1. White’s Smalltall’s Fairytale (Imp Norway).  An Elegant bitch with correct shoulder construction.  Feminine head with an excellent rear end and correct croup.  Lots to like about this girl.

2. Squires and Stevens Jacqukir Strike A Pose At Tabordane.  A 4 year old Harli who is lacking in elegance but with a decent head and excellent pigmentation.  Turning out in the front and unfortunately a soft topline.  She moved out well for her handler.

Sp Harlequin Open Bitch (3/2)

1. Squires and Stevens Jacqukir Strike A Pose At Tabordane.

Sp Blue Open Bitch (3/2)

1. Harrison’s Jasnettdanes Misty Morning. Striking for her beautiful colour which for me is the perfect shade of blue.  A nice feminine head showing correct planes, good eye shape and colour with a good shoulder assembly.  A firm but broken topline and a steep croup.

Sp Black Open Bitch (1/-)

Wood’s Alsphuzazz Dolce Donum.  This 6 year old bitch has a nice clean outline presenting a very neat picture.  Moved out well but loosening in front with her advancing years.  I would prefer more length of head and a longer croup.

Sp Fawn Open Bitch (4/-)

1. Collett’s Foaldown Secret Whisper.

2. Bourton’s Tenaya Cherokee Sun Dance For Verano.

3. Squires and Stevens Garsak Season Of The Witch At Tabordane.

Sp Mantle Open Bitch (2/-)

1. Walton’s Tamzdane Bohemian Raspberry At Ravendane.

2. Tempest’s Adoreadane Make Your Marc. A decent 2 year old with a pretty head which I much preferred to my winner and has a nice dark eye.  Not as sound as my winner but with a good topline and nice quarters.
