CRITIQUE

The Great Dane Club Championship Show

05/08/18

I would like to thank the committee of the Great Dane Club for inviting me to judge and for making me so welcome, my wonderful and able stewards Chris & Jackie Woods for keeping the paperwork and exhibitors organised, and the exhibitors for their entry and allowing me the priviledge of going over their dogs.  I thoroughly enjoyed my day.

However, some exhibits were far too ‘fine’ throughout, there were several bad mouths, and there are definite concerns with movement in the breed at the moment, the main problem seems to be front assemblies that were either too narrow, short upper arms or lacking in angulation in general causing wrinkle over the withers, and surprisingly some fawn youngsters greying really early.

Special Veteran Bitch (3, 1a)

Lovely to see Veterans out and enjoying being shown.

1st Ingram’s Dainmajik The Sorceress ShCM, 7.5yo and in super condition, very balanced and typey girl, with a head of good proportions, expressive, dark eye and good ear size and set, well arched neck of good length set into well laid back shoulder, upper arm fraction short, well off for bone, good topline and croup, well ribbed and depth of rib reaching to elbow, good width of thigh to set off her well angulated hindquarters, moved out well in profile.  Delighted to award her RCC, and with agreement of the dog judge, Best Veteran In Show.
2nd Hugill’s Bandwar Swift, 8.5yo black b, finer boned type than 1, although carrying a little too much weight, good head proportions and beautiful dark eye, shortish neck, good depth of chest and well sprung rib, croup a little steep, unfortunately untidy undercarriage.

Minor Puppy Bitch (8)

Exceptionally strong class full of quality puppies with some exhibits having to go cardless, some real babies, but bodes very well for the future.

1st Southgate’s Empress Elivira V Rosherta (Imp NLD), 6m black b, balanced outline, typey, well grown quality bitch shown in gleaming condition, good head proportions, dark tight eye, good ear placement although a little large currently but no doubt she will grow into them, long clean neck, well boned straight legs, shoulder well laid back, good topline, depth of rib reaching to elbow, croup slightly steep currently, well angulated hindquarters set off by good width of thigh, hocks straight when viewed from rear, good tail.  Best mover in a quality class.  Think this puppy should have a bright future, BPB.
2nd McGuinness, Nelson-McGuinness & Burns Dinahtron Rags To Riches, 6m fawn bm, real baby of good type, expressive head of good proportions, dark, tight eye, good ear placement, of equal angulation fore and aft, good depth of chest, little long cast at present, low set hocks, more together on the move than those placed behind her.
3rd Harrison’s Jasnettdanes Lamborghini.

Puppy Bitch (7, 1a)

1st MacGowan’s Shlarra Picture Perfect At Penmarlam, 11m rich fawn bm, unfortunately a little shy which I forgave as a puppy and was able to go over her.  Well grown, typical head of good proportions, dark tight eye, good length and width of neck into well laid shoulder, well boned straight forelegs, depth of rib reaching to elbow, topline fraction soft at the moment, good croup and tailset, well angulated hindquarters with good width of thigh and low set hocks.  Best mover in class.
2nd McGuinness Dinahtron Rag Doll, 6m fbm litter sister to 2nd in MPB, real baby giving a lot away in this class, good length of head and muzzle but would prefer a little more stop, good length of neck, good depth of rib, shorter coupled than her sister but currently still a little longcast, shoulder and hind angulation moderate and equal, topline and croup ok and good feet.  Moved well.
3rd Allan’s Dramadanes Scarlett O’Hara.

Junior Bitch (6, 2a)

1st Bithell’s Bourntwyn By My Side, 14mo fbm, balanced outline, alert and upstanding displaying ‘dash and dare’, head of good proportions, lovely expression, long clean neck, shoulder well laid back but slightly short upper arm, good topline, well sprung rib reaching to elbow, croup ok, well angulated hind quarters with good width of upper thigh and low set hocks, good feet.  Best mover.
2nd Morgan-Evans Classic Beauty, 13mo fbm, finer in type than 1, expressive head of good proportions, dark eye, good length of neck well set in to well laid back shoulder, short upper arm, good topline and croup, well angulated hind quarters with good width of thigh, chest needs to drop.  Would just like a bit more of her.  Moved soundly.
3rd Middleton’s Rayjen Campaign.

Yearling Bitch (8, 5a)

All 3 bitches present moved very well.

1st Allison’s Gretadane Honey Suckle, 22m fbm, balanced, well grown, head of good proportions, good length of neck, shoulder angulation ok but slightly short in upper arm, good depth of chest reaching to elbow, ribs well sprung, well angulated hindquarters, moderate width of thigh, would like a little bit more of her, best mover.
2nd Pocock’s Tamzdane Cake My Day, 22mo well marked harlie b, balanced outline, pleasing head, tight eye, moderate shoulder angulation but slightly short in upper arm and a little loose, good topline, good depth of chest to elbow, good croup, moderate hind angulation, well let down hocks but not straight when viewed from behind.  Moved well enough, just needs to tighten.
3rd Middleton’s Rayjen Campaign.

Novice Bitch (2, 1a)

1st Pocock’s Tamzdane Sofa So Good, 6mo harlie unplaced in MPB, much more settled in this class and able to assess movement.  Lots to like but harlies take longer and this is a raw 6mo baby …  White background with large black torn patches.  Lovely type, good head proportions in profile, slightly broad at the moment and eyes loose currently, good length of neck into well angulated shoulder, good depth of chest to elbow, good topline and croup, well angulated hindquarters.  Little front heavy at the moment so unbalances her outline, but time on her side and could trouble the best when finished.

Post Graduate Bitch (5, 2a)

1st Liddell’s Gretadane Honey Bee, fbm, much finer type but well-proportioned and balanced, head and neck carried high, alert expression, good head and muzzle proportions, good length of neck, shoulder of moderate angulation and slightly short in upper arm, ribs reaching to just above elbow, topline good but slightly broken behind wither (might improve with more weight on), hindquarters moderately angulated, tail slightly short of hock.  Best mover.
2nd Hodgson’s Samdice The One, 2yo fbm, heavier type than 1, not quite in proportion, head planes ok, good length and width of neck, shoulders well laid back but slightly short in upper arm, well sprung rib or good depth reaching to elbow, topline with slight rise over loin, croup rounding off, good bend of stifle and hocks.
3rd Harrison’s Jasnettdanes Moonlight.

Limit Bitch (7)

Lovely quality class.

1st Bourton’s Zefather Crazy Diamond For Verano JW, 2yo fbm, lovely type, balanced outline with no exaggeration and everything in proportion, good head planes with typical quizzical expression, dark eye, good ear set, would prefer a little more stop if being picky, good length of neck flowing into withers, shoulder well laid back but fractionally short in upper arm, well boned, good pasterns and catlike feet, level topline, good depth of chest reaching to elbow with well sprung rib, equally angulated fore and aft allowing sound movement, good width of thigh with well let down hocks.  Best mover in class, delighted to award her BCC & in conjunction with my co-judge BIS.  Later found out that it was her crowning CC, a worthy champion.
2nd Bishton’s Jaydania Johanna Conta, beautifully marked brindle bitch of finer type than 1, typical expression, good head and muzzle proportions, enough stop, tight dark eye, long neck flowing into moderately angulated shoulders, pronounced sternum, good flat bone and pasterns, catlike feet, ribs reaching to elbow, level topline with good croup and tailset, moderately angulated hindquarters with good width of thigh and well let down hocks.  Moved soundly.
3rd Tempest’s Adoreadane Just The Ticket JW.

Open Bitch (5, 3a)

Two quality, typey bitches.

1st Sneddon & Booth’s Ch Culseandanes House Of Tully, richly coloured fbm of lovely type, big girl, balanced outline, typical head with dark eye and quizzical expression, good length of neck set into well laid back shoulder, slightly short in upper arm, little loaded in front when viewed in profile, well boned, good pasterns and catlike feet, level topline, good croup and tailset, good depth of chest to elbow, ribs well sprung, good bend of stifle and low set hocks.  Moved well.
2nd Lawson & Hunter’s Droolakiss Gold N’ Glamour JW, lighter coloured fbm, pleasing outline, expressive head, good eye, good length of neck into well laid back shoulder, slightly short in upper arm, level topline with slightly sloping croup, good body with depth to well sprung rib, moderate hind angulation with good width to thigh, hocks well let down.  Moved well.

Champion Bitch (4)

Quality class.

1st Sneddon & Booth’s Ch Culseandanes House Of Tully, 1st in OB.
2nd Ryan & George’s Ch Keirkanes Kiss From Heaven, fbm, typey, balanced b, smaller than 1st, good head planes with characteristic ridge on bridge of nose, eye not quite well placed, good length of neck flowing into moderately angulated shoulders, good flat straight bone, level topline, moderate hind angulation, reasonable width of thigh, well let down hocks, feet a little flat.  Moved soundly.
3rd Searle’s Ch Droolakiss Miss Busy Body At Murrayvhale.

Special Open Fawn Bitch (1)

1st Abbott’s Nikami The Lyrical, elegant and feminine, balanced outline but slightly long, head and neck carried high, head of good proportions with characteristic expression, good earset, arched neck of good length, shoulder well laid but slightly short in upper arm, good topline, croup and tailset, chest reaching just to elbow, well angulated behind with enough width of thigh and lovely low set hocks, well arched, tight catlike feet.  Moved soundly.

Special Open Brindle Bitch (1)

1st Bishton’s Jaydania Johanna Conta, 2nd in Limit b.

Special Open Black Bitch (5)

1st Simpson’s Renescent Miss Naughty, 2yo, balanced and in proportion with flowing lines, very nice type, good head planes with reasonable length to muzzle, dark eye, good length of neck, well off for bone, well sprung ribs reaching in depth to elbow, level topline, good croup and tailset, hocks well let down, moderate and equal angulation fore and aft allowing for sound movement, but would have preferred a little more angulation to give reach and drive.   Moved soundly.
2nd Middleton’s Taysca Must Be Cartier, 16mo, balanced with pleasing outline, head narrower than 1 with good length of foreface and planes, good length of neck flowing into good front assembly with well angulated shoulder, rib reaching just to elbow, level topline, croup very slightly rounding off, could do with just a little more hind angulation but has time on her side.  Moved soundly.
3rd Blacks Bandwar Taylor Made.

Special Open Blue Bitch (2)

1st Price’s Ch Leamap Iron Maiden, 6yo in superb condition, very balanced outline, correct head proportions in profile, neck arched and of good length well set into excellent front assembly with well angulated shoulder and good width of chest, well boned, chest reaching to elbow with well sprung rib, level topline, good croup and tailset, well angulated hindquarters set off by good width of thigh and low set hocks.  Moved very well.
2nd Middleton’s Dornoir Ain, heavier bitch of good type, good head planes in profile but fractionally broad in backskull, good length of neck, moderate shoulder angulation, good depth of chest reaching to elbow with well sprung rib, good topline and croup, good width of thigh.  Moved soundly.

Special Open Harlequin Bitch (3)

Quality class, any of which could be 1st on another day.  Absolutely loved the 3rd placed bitch, however despite valiant attempts by her young handler I simply could not go over her, real shame as she was the best mover in this class.

1st Pocock’s Int/NL Ch Ravendane Frozen With Tamzdane JW ShCM, well marked, balanced outline, good head proportions and length of neck, well laid shoulder but little short in upper arm, level topline, well sprung ribs of good depth of reaching to elbow, good hind angulation set off by good width of thigh and well let down hocks.  Moved soundly.
2nd Ellis-Khanna’s Ch Ravendane Maleficent For Harvaxe, balanced bitch of finer type, unfortunately a little shy today but able to go over her, heavier marked than 1, typical head of good proportions, long neck, would prefer more front angulation, level topline but slightly soft today (maybe the heat?), good hind angulation with good width of thigh.  Moved soundly.
3rd Kelleway’s Jaemluks Dannie Of Clunton.

Special Open Mantle Bitch (2)

1st Walton’s Tamzdane Bohemian Raspberry At Ravendane, balanced outline, reasonably well marked, good head planes but eyes showing haw and a fraction too much lip, good length of neck, moderate front angulation, good depth to rib, level topline, good croup and tailset, very good hind angulation with just enough width of thigh.  Best mover.
2nd Waring’s Ravendane Queen Of Darkness For Elleyenda JW, 5yo of heavier type, beautifully marked with full white collar, correct face markings, stockings and tail tip.  Good head planes, tight dark eye (now with spectacles), neck is of correct length (although markings make it look shorter), well boned, moderate shoulder angulation, well sprung ribs, good width and depth of chest, level topline, slightly steep croup, well angulated hindquarters with good width of thigh, with low set hocks.   Not the movement of 1.
